A 5-day workshop on Smart and Sustainable Urbanisation Planning was organised in Indore, under the India - EU Urban Partnership. This was the fifth workshop in this series on ‘Mainstreaming Resilience in Metropolitan Planning in Indore Metropolitan Region’, held during 10th to 14th October 2022.

Shri Shankar Lalwani, Member of Parliament, Indore, Shri Jaypal Singh Chawda, Chairman, Indore Development Authority, Shrimati Malini Gaur, Member of Legislative Assembly, Indore, and Shri Ramesh Mendola, Member of Legislative Assembly, Indore along with Shri Ram Prakash Ahirwar, Chief Executive Officer, Indore Development Authority were present in the inauguration ceremony held on 10th October 2022 in Brilliant Conventions, Indore. Ms. Kamilla Kristensen Rai, Counsellor, Delegation of the European Union joined the program virtually.

Renowned European Urban Planner Mr. Pedro Ortiz led the entire 5-day interactive workshop. Participants worked together to develop a list of bankable projects and recommendations that align with and support the Regional Plan’s implementation. With a focus on Metropolitan planning, the intensive workshop provided inputs to support sustainable and resilient urbanisation of Indore. It would help develop the vision for the next 30 years of Indore Metropolitan Region as it focused on the sustainable development of housing sector, productive and economic activities, transportation network, human resource, and environment of the region. The participating groups deliberated on the expansion of Indore Metropolitan Region, Ujjain, Devas, Dhar, Mhow and Depalpur and developed synergistic set of projects to create a multiplier effect in the development of the region.


Over forty participants representing key stakeholders attended the workshop. Participants included representatives from Indore Development Authority (IDA), Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), Directorate of Town and County Planning (T & CP), Indore Smart City Development Limited (ISCDL), Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), Madhya Pradesh Housing Board (MPHB), Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (MPSEDCL), Atal Indore City Transport Service Limited (AICTSL), related academic institutions and civil society.

It was the first time that the complexity of metropolitan management was addressed in the context of Indore Metropolitan Region with the participants and other stakeholders who were present along with the interlinked issues that the subject can deliver. The participants opined that the workshop shall be a vital milestone for the development of Indore Metropolitan area.
